I often get questions about what to wear for a pregnancy photo shoot. That’s why I’ve put together some tips and ideas on how to dress for your photo shoot.
Why I don’t offer dresses for pregnancy photography
I choose not to offer dresses for pregnant women for several reasons. Firstly, I don’t have the space to store a large collection of dresses. Secondly, I often have multiple photo shoots on the same day and this would mean that the dresses could quickly be used by multiple clients. It would also require higher prices to cover the cost of dry cleaning, laundry and new dresses.
That’s why I ask my clients to bring their own clothes. This allows you to be creative with your own wardrobe or to order something special for the shoot.
Get creative with your wardrobe – or your partner’s!
A popular classic is to borrow a shirt from your partner and combine it with a pair of jeans. Jeans don’t have to fit – on the contrary, they can be left open and accentuate your beautiful pregnant belly. If you feel most comfortable with a little more coverage, you can wear leggings underneath.
Other ideas include:
- A sports bra instead of a shirt.
- An oversized blazer for an elegant and modern look.
- A breezy summer dress that accentuates your figure.
- A kimono can be a beautiful way to hide a little while still showing off your belly.
Underwear – Remember the details
It’s important to remember appropriate underwear for different outfits. See-through clothing and underwear in contrasting colors can quickly become visible in photos.
- If you plan to pose in underwear, black underwear is recommended for dark, shaded images.
- For brighter images, white or nude underwear works well.
- Colors can also add a personal touch and make images more vibrant.
Is your partner coming along?
Color coordinate your outfits for a harmonious look. It looks great when couples match their colors and clothing choices. This creates a sense of calm and gives a nice, clean look. If you’re wearing a white shirt and jeans, it would be perfect if your partner can find a matching pair of jeans and shirt.

If you’ve already bought a maternity dress, you’re welcome to bring it along. If you have several dresses, please bring several options so we can play with different looks.
If you’re thinking of buying a dress for the occasion, it can sometimes be difficult to find something that fits perfectly. However, I’ve found that big brands like ASOS often have a great selection of maternity dresses. A quick Google search can be a good start.
