Why is a good LinkedIn image so important?

Updated: Mar. 2026

Your profile picture on LinkedIn is often the first thing people notice. It’s not just a picture, it’s your visual identity. A good profile picture builds credibility, signals professionalism and makes it easier for potential customers, partners or employers to remember you.

It only takes 2 seconds

People form a first impression in 2 seconds before they even read your title or experience. Your image is the first thing they see. Make it count.

1. Make a strong first impression

On LinkedIn, you’re competing for attention. A professional and welcoming image can make the difference between being overlooked or remembered. A bad picture, or no picture, signals a lack of seriousness, no matter how strong your CV is.

2. Background and light make a big difference

One of the things I most often see go wrong is clutter in the background or poor lighting. It steals focus from you as a person.

  • Background: Neutral or slightly blurred works best
  • Light: Natural light or soft artificial lighting, avoid harsh shadows on the face

It doesn’t have to be complicated, but it has to be intentional.

3. Choose the right attire

You don’t need a suit if it doesn’t reflect your industry. Think about what you would wear to an important meeting. Creative and tech professionals may have a more casual look, while consultants and lawyers typically dress more formally. Feel free to bring an extra outfit so we can find what works best.

4. Focus on the face and eye contact

Your face should take up around 60-70% of the image. This makes it easier to recognize you, both online and when you meet in person. Looking directly into the camera creates a sense of eye contact and builds trust.

5. A natural smile works wonders

A genuine smile is a great icebreaker. It doesn’t have to be a big grin, a calm and natural smile with eye contact signals friendliness and openness. Remember to check the image in small format too, because what works in large may look reserved as a thumbnail on mobile.

6. Avoid selfies and private photos

A selfie sends a less professional signal on LinkedIn, especially if you can see the outstretched arm or mirror in the background. Vacation and private photos belong on other platforms. On LinkedIn, it’s about being taken seriously.

7. Keep the image updated

Many people wait too long to update their photo. But LinkedIn is not a dating platform, it’s about credibility and recognition. If people meet you at a networking event and don’t recognize you from your profile picture, something is wrong. Age and experience is also an advantage as it signals competence.

8. Get a professional photo, you can feel it

In my studio at Vesterbrogade 171 in Frederiksberg, I help you find the right light, the right angle and an expression that feels natural. A professional LinkedIn photo is an investment in your personal branding and is often used in multiple contexts: website, press coverage, email signature.

Closing thoughts

A good LinkedIn photo isn’t about looking perfect, it’s about being credible, professional and recognizable. It’s a small detail with a big impact, and often the first investment that pays off.
